SAFE USE OF POSTINOR – THE MORNING AFTER PILL
Sometimes, sexually active and fertile heterosexual partners (married and unmarried ), may decide to engage in unprotected sex without meaning to effect pregnancy. Well, even during protected intercourse and “pregnancy-avoidant sex” in which other birth control methods (such as the safe calendar and withrawal methods) are applied, accidents or unforeseen circumstances may sometimes occur .
There have been notable cases of condoms rupturing, and inadvertently ejaculating semen into the female before full withdrawal. Also, negative circumstantial victims, such as victims of rape, might really need to prevent getting pregnant . This is where an emergency contraceptive pill or Morning After Pill is highly needed; playing a key role in preventing unwanted pregnancy.
Emergency Contraceptive pills or Morning after Pills are drugs intended to disrupt or delay ovulation which is necessary for pregnancy to take place. A very popular example of such drugs is Postinor.
Postinor is an effective emergency contraceptive tablet which contains the hormone levonorgestrel (made of progestin only). It is marketed in two forms: Postinor -1(which contains a single dose of 1.5mg levonorgestrel ) and Postinor -2( containing two tablets of 0.75mg levonorgestrel each, to be taken 12hours apart). Postinor, taken 72 hours after unprotected sex,is highly efficient in suppressing ovulation, thus preventing the onset of pregnancy.
Postinor Sides Effects
Inasmuch as Postinor is held in high esteem as a useful tool in quick pregnancy prevention, there are however some side effects associated with It’s use. There have been reported cases of nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, and breast tenderness. These minor levonorgestrel side effects do not usually last long and generally disappear within 24hours. Another notable side effect is the temporary disruption of the menstrual cycle: either delayed or appears much earlier than anticipated with concomitant irregular flow. Nevertheless, there is absolutely nothing to be scared of, as Postinor has no major deleterious effect on the body. In some females, the afore-mentioned effects may not even occur.
There are certain things an individual must consider before using Postinor though. Due to drug interactions , it is not advisable for an individual under certain medications to use Postinor .
Medications such as those used in treating :
- Epilepsy (e.g barbiturates )
- Tuberculosis (e.g rifampicin)
- HIV (e.g ritonovir)
- Fungal infections (e.g griseofulvin); should not be used in conjunction with Postinor.
- Also, individuals with ailments such as diabetes mellitus, ischaemic heart disease, stroke, breast cancer and severe liver disease are not advised to ingest Postinor.
An over the counter drug like Postinor, has made it very easy to combat unwanted pregnancy and it’s attendant stress. It is also a very useful alternative to have instead of waiting to buy abortion pills with high risk factors.
However, it is pertinent to note that Postinor can not prevent sexually transmitted diseases and also cannot affect pregnancy once fertilization has taken place . It is also highly recommended to consult a pharmacist if the individual in question is under any form of medication to prevent complications.
